Obituary

Roberta Briley, 85, of Creston, died, Thursday March 1, 2018 at Clearview Home in Clearfield Iowa.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday March 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Creston. Pastor Jodi Rushing will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date in the Murray Cemetery.

There is no public visitation scheduled.

Georgia "Roberta" Briley was born January 21, 1933 southeast of Creston, to George Augustus Western & Gladys Jane Blalock Western at their farm home She attended Highland Center School (Highland # 5) and later attended Creston High School where she graduated in 1951. Her father George purchased an airplane in the 1940's and Roberta often accompanied her Dad on long flights to Flying Farmer Breakfasts many times flying to Illinois. She could fly the plane up but her Dad would not let her land. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls She also was a member of Highland 4-H club and took her projects to the fair at Lorimor Iowa.

Following graduation she attended airline school in Omaha then attended college at South Bend Indiana and Des Moines and returned to Creston and worked at McNabb's furniture store where she worked in sales and bookkeeping. She later went to work for the Farmers Coop as bookkeeper where she met David Briley and on October 6, 1957 they were married at the United Methodist church in Creston. They were married almost 51 years when Dave passed away in 2008.

They rented land around Arispe and Shannon City area. Roberta worked for Kiburz Seed Company in Afton until 1968. Roberta left her job and became Dave's best and only hired hand! A job she truly loved. The family attended Methodist churches at both Arispe and Shannon City. Roberta was a 4-H leader for the Grant Go Getters club for a few years. She was active in the neighborhood club near Shannon City and enjoyed neighborhood card clubs in both Arispe and Shannon City. In 1969 the family moved to her birthplace and farmed with her parents. In the mid 1970's The family moved to Creston where Roberta began to work at the Sheltered workshop as payroll clerk and accounts payable clerk later the company became known as Innovative Industries. She retired after 25 plus years.

She and Dave began camping after they quit farming and enjoyed many trips to various locations. Roberta picked up a little part time job in retirement when her daughter Judy and her husband, Doug, began an auction company. Roberta was cashier from 2000 to 2009 helping with the auctions.

Roberta was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Creston, was a member of the "Dorcas Circle Group", member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron and member of the Daughters of American Revolution and a volunteer at the Historical Village and the Welcome Center.

Roberta is survived by her two daughters: Jane Briley of Creston and Judy (husband Doug) Wedemeyer of rural Casey, IA; two grandchildren Bret Wedemeyer & Matt (wife Stacey) Wedemeyer three great grandchildren all of Casey, IA; brother Charles (wife Jean) Western of rural Afton, IA; sister Marjorie Pettinger of Lucas, IA; along with a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Roberta was preceded in death by her parents and husband David in 2008.
