Richard Skarda, 82 , of Creston, died April 9, 2018, at Homestead Assisted Living in Creston. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. Father Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Open visitation will be from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday with a time of sharing at 3:30 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Richard 'Dick' Edward Skarda was born December 10, 1935, in Schuyler, Neb., to George Edward Skarda and Helen (Abraham) Skarda. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1953 and received his Bachelor's Degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb. On July 27, 1957, Dick was united in marriage to Sharon Jean Rozanek in Columbus, Neb. Dick taught and coached in Elwood and Cambridge, Neb. He then went back to school to get his Masters from Wayne State College and during that time he taught at Boone Elementary in Iowa. They lived in Ames where Dick was the Physical Education teacher as well as the assistant Track Coach.

In 1965, they moved to Creston where Dick taught Physical Education and American History and he also was the head Track coach and assistant coach for football and basketball for several years. Coaching Track was his passion and he would continue to do so until his retirement 39 years later. After a year of retirement, Dick went back to be the assistant girls track coach. In 1988, Dick and Sharon took their nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Sarah, Fred, Tim and Molly Morrow into their home and raised them following the death of their parents.

Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler and Creston, Lions Club while in Cambridge, Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge in Creston. Dick was awarded the Coach of the Year for the State of Iowa Track Coaches Association in 1978. He was also a member of the Husker Beef Club. He was an avid gardener, loved his dogs, and attending Husker Football games with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife Sharon of Creston; son Rich Skarda of Creston; daughter, LeAnn (husband Chris) Balmanno of Monticello, MN.; Grandchildren Abby (husband Eric) Sink, Corning Ia, Jarrett and Erin Skarda, Creston, IA, Taylor Hess , Hayley, Nick and Julia Balmanno all of Monticello MN, nieces, Jennifer (husband Scott) England of CO, Sarah Morrow of Ames and Molly (husband Erik) Paulson of CO.; nephews, Fred Morrow of Ames and Tim (wife Brenda) Morrow of Altoon; and four great nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Skarda, brothers Bob and Marvin (Helen) Skarda, Helen & Bill Rozanek father and mother in law, and brother and sister-in-law, David and Nancy Morrow.
