PHYLLIS' SERVICE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 1:00 P.M. SATURDAY, WITH VISITATION ON FRIDAY

Phyllis Zarifis, 83, of Creston joined her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Creston Specialty Care. Celebration of Life Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at First Baptist Church in Creston. Pastor Norman Hoag will officiate the service. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Open visitation will be 2-7:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2018, with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Alzheimer's Association. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com.

Phyllis Zarifis was born June 15, 1934 in Chicago, Ill., to Earl Wilton Johnson and Esther Margaret (Hansman) Johnson. She grew up in Oelwein and graduated with the class of 1952. She received her teaching degree from UNI (Iowa State Teachers College).

On August 16, 1955, Phyllis was united in marriage to Alexander Peter Zarifis in Waterloo at the Greek Orthodox Church. Phyllis was a teacher in Keota, IA., from 1955-1956 and Prescott from 1960-63. Following her teaching career, Phyllis devoted her life to taking care of her family. She resided in Sioux City, Hopkinton, Keota and Creston.

Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creston, Jaycettes, Elzevir Reading Circle and the Union County Bloodmobile, where she served as Chairman. She was also a member of the Gideon's Auxiliary. Phyllis' pastimes included, cross stitch, needlepoint and sewing. Phyllis was an avid gardener where she spent many hours tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Phyllis was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed cheering on the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include her four sons, Clark (wife Barbara) Zarifis of Iowa City, Ia., Michael (wife Jina) Zarifis ofa Springfield, Mo., Kenneth (wife Isa) of Austin, TX and Thomas Zarifis of LeGrand, Ia.; one daughter, Marie (husband Dan) Chapman of Creston; daughter-in-law Kelli Zarifis of Carl Junction, Mo.; eleven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, husband Al in 2008 and brother Kenneth Johnson.
