Phyllis Cheers, 95, of Afton, died Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Afton Care Center in Afton.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the Arispe United Methodist Church in Arispe. Rev. Joel Sutton and Rev. Jim Morris will officiate.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton.
Family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m., service time at the Arispe United Methodist Church.

Phyllis Delores (Smith) Cheers, daughter of Lola Glen (Comfort) Smith and John Hiram Smith, was born on July 31, 1920 in Union County, Iowa. She was educated at Sand Creek #6 Country School and at the Arispe Consolidated School, and years later took classes at SWCC.
On June 21, 1936, Phyllis married Russell F. Cheers at the Afton Methodist Parsonage in Afton, Iowa. They lived east of Arispe in Sand Creek Township, at three different locations. Together they worked and farmed all of their married life. They moved to Afton in 1979. Russell died in 1983.
Phyllis was a member of the Arispe United Methodist Church for nearly 90 years, an original Board Member that helped start the Afton Care Center, P.E.O. Chapter BF, the Order of the Eastern Star, former Sand Creek Township 4-H Leader, East Union Dollars for Scholars Committee member and part of the Merry Menders Sewing Club.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon Bennett of Creston and Evelynne Sue (husband Dr. Rodney R.) Stream of Chariton; a son, Ken (wife Pennie) Cheers of Afton; sister-in-law, Carol Cheers Pugh of Arispe; 11 grandchildren: Ann (Paul) Johnson, Kathy (Gary) Bartlett, Rhonda (Ward) Maxwell, Alan (Donnie) Bennett, David (Rena) Cheers, Courtney (John Clark) Cheers, Emily (Eric) Forquer, Jodie (Joe) Greig and John (Becky) Gonseth, Lisa (Lucas) Beverlin and Sarah (Nick) Franzkowiak; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell, a daughter-in-law, Sandra L. (Hapke) Cheers, a son-in-law, Louis R. Bennett, two brothers-in-law, Wayne Cheers and Roscoe Carl Cheers in infancy and a sister-in-law, Evelynne Mae Cheers, in infancy.
