Lonnie was born November 10, 1950 to William K. Grail and Clara B. Monroe in Iowa City, IA. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1968 and went on to serve in the United States Navy from August of 1968 until November of 1972. After returning from the service, Lonnie began his career working on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and continued on until November of 2014 when he retired as an engineer from the Burlington Northern Railroad. He treasured the friendships and connections with his railroad buddies that he made over the years of his career.
In his spare time later in life, Lonnie focused on being a loving Grandpa to his 12 grandchildren, fishing with his wife Terri at local farm ponds around Arispe, ice fishing with his sons and friends, and gardening. Lonnie was also a diehard Iowa Hawkeye fan throughout his life however had the moral courage to allow his son, Bryce and son-in-law, Zack to quietly be cyclone fans. He was a man who enjoyed the simple things in life like a good cup of coffee, reading the Des Moines Register daily and slow cruises down Iowa gravel roads enjoying the wildlife and nature. His kind-hearted nature, big laugh and smile will be missed dearly by his friends and family who loved him.
Left to cherish his memory and the good times are his wife Terri, daughter Shelly (Michael) Braudis of Campton, N. H., son Bryce (Tracy) Grail of Ames, daughter Mandee (Zack) Smith of Lake Mills, daughter Heather Buckner of Mt Ayr, daughter Bobbi (Steve) Turner of Arispe and son Zach Grail of Arispe; grandchildren Henry and Greta Braudis, Ella, Harper and Sylvie Grail, Avery and Eleanor Smith, Scott Driskill and Livia Buckner, and Rason Grail, Slade and Tukker Turner.
