Kay Ritter, 78, of Creston, died Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of influenza B.

Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, 400 N. Elm in Creston.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Pastor Jodi Rushing will officiate.

Open visitation will be 2-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 p.m.

Kay Elise (Underwood) Ritter, daughter of Helen E. (Soloth) Underwood and Sam G. Underwood, was born on August 30, 1939 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She graduated from Treynor High School in 1957. Kay went on to graduate from the Nebraska Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in May 1960 and was then employed by the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

On July 8, 1961, Kay married Edwin Ritter in McClelland, Iowa. They settled in Creston, where Kay worked the next 35 years in nursing at Greater Community Hospital, retiring in 1997 as the Surgical Department Nurse Manager. Kay went on to operate Kay's Katering and did insurance physicals for many years. She also volunteered with Friends of the Library, Greater Regional Medical Center, the Hospice House, the READS Program and the local Red Cross Blood Mobile among others.

Kay was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Creston, where she served as Bell Choir Director, was very active with the United Methodist Women, and was a Walk to Emmaus facilitator. She was also an active member of the P.E.O. L.G. Chapter, the Chautauqua Club and several bridge clubs. Kay was well known for her skills in the kitchen, and especially for spreading love through cinnamon rolls, caramel brownies and cookies.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin Ritter of Creston; three daughters, Elise Ann Ritter Mafuta, Beth Noelle Ritter Ruback and Natalie Jean Sobek; two sons-in-law, Chad Ruback and Mark Sobek; one brother and sister-in-law, John & ReneƩ Underwood; seven grandchildren: Rachel Elise Ritter Ruback, Samantha Lyn Ritter Ruback, Danielle Chandler, Quinnlyn Ruby Sobek, Olivia Grace Sobek, Candy Onsibay Mafuta and Danielo Mafuta; and beloved nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Grace Kaylla Sobek, a brother, Eric Underwood, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Earl and Helen Ritter.
