Jeanne Herzberg (Helen Jeanette) of West Des Moines, Iowa, went home to be with her Lord on May 28, 2017. Jeanne was born on May 26, 1930, in Oak Park, IL, the daughter of Harlan and Vivian (Thurber) Heath. She is survived by many who will cherish her memory: her loving husband of 62 years, Lawrence Herzberg of West Des Moines, Iowa; her sister, Sandra (Kenneth) Marquardt of Missouri Valley, Iowa; her children, Sandi Adams of Independence, Missouri, Drs. MeriBeth and Scott Stegall of McDonough, Georgia, Bruce and Beth Herzberg of Afton, Iowa, and Vivian Herzberg of West Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren, Atrea Rackley, The Rev. Martin (Diana) Herzberg, Luke Herzberg, Amanda Herzberg, Chloe Stegall, and Camilla Stegall; and, her great-grandchildren, Aryen McDonald and James Rackley, Grace and Noelle Jeanne Herzberg as well as many nieces, nephews, and very dear friends. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Constance Marie, her parents, and her son-in-law, Dub (WJ) Adams.

At the age of six, she moved with her family to Missouri Valley, Iowa, where she graduated from high school at age 16 and then attended Huron College, majoring in music. In 1951, she graduated from Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Ever intellectually curious, Jeanne also completed an undergraduate degree in public administration in 1979 and a master's degree in counseling psychology in 1986.
Her first position as a registered nurse led her to Clarinda Municipal Hospital, where she delighted in working in labor and delivery. In Clarinda, Jeanne met the love of her life, Lawrence Herzberg, and they married on August 10, 1954. Together they created a loving home where they raised their four children. Active with her children's activities, she helped to form and lead a 4-H Club for neighborhood girls so they could learn "to make the best better." Jeanne modeled a life of love, devotion, and service, liberally seasoned with humor from her quick wit and a twinkle from her sparkling blue eyes.

As hobbies, Jeanne loved and collected nativities, read widely and avidly, and enjoyed varied crafts from needlework to ceramics. Her healing touch extended to the dolls which she restored in her Doll-e-Well Doll Hospital. She loved to knit and crochet. Over many years, she and Lawrence created treasured ceramic Santa Claus collections and nativity scenes for each child and grandchild.

In the mid-1960s, Jeanne became a nurse educator, first as an instructor in the Iowa Western (Clarinda) practical nursing program and then developing the practical nursing program at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, serving as its first director. In later years, Jeanne was instrumental in the development of Green Valley Hospice in Creston, serving on the initial task force and as its first Executive Director.

Whatever Jeanne did in her life, she did for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Always active in her congregation, Jeanne was a member of Immanuel and St. John Lutheran congregations in Clarinda, Iowa, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Creston, Iowa. Jeanne loved working with children and helped establish the Trinity Lutheran Preschool, serving as its first director. Whether she was teaching Sunday School; directing the choir; serving in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the Altar Guild, Naomi Circle, or, on the prayer chain; participating as an AAL Lamplighter; or, leading a Lifelight Bible Study, Jeanne used the many gifts God gave her in His service.
