Carolyn Stamper, 85, of Creston, died Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Creston. Pastor David Tebbenkamp will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Open visitation will be 2-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Memorials are to the First Baptist Church in Creston. Frances "Carolyn" Stamper was born January 29, 1931 in Lorimor, IA., to Mary Margaret (Searle) and John Husted. She graduated from Creston High School in 1949. On November 6, 1949 she was united in marriage to Bernard Gail Stamper, Sr. in Creston at the First United Methodist Church. They lived in Creston and Carolyn worked at McClellan's in the Candy Department. She later worked in the Three Sisters Store and later the City National Bank in the bookkeeping Department in Davenport, Ia. She also worked at the American National Bank after moving to Lubbock, Texas.
In 1958 they moved to Atchison, Kan. where she was an active homemaker and started tole painting, she later began teaching many types of painting classes. In 1976 after returning to Creston, they bought interests in Creston Arts & Gifts and later bought the entire business and began teaching a variety of classes in tole painting and china painting. Carolyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creston, Arts Council in Creston, Creston's China Painting Club, an active member in the Union County Republican Party and Gideon Auxiliary. She and her husband had their own Nursing Home ministry and Carolyn was an early member of the Creston Christian Women's Club.
Survivors include her husband Bernard Stamper, Sr. of Creston; three daughters, Judy Carter of Winterset; Melody (husband Scott) Mittlestadt of Round Lake, Ill.; Linda Stamper of South Korea; one son, Bernard, Jr. (wife Pamela Ann) Stamper of Des Moines, IA.; one brother, Robert (wife Charlene) Husted of Valcano, Calif.; one half –sister of Sioux City, Ia.; four grandchildren, Marcus Mittlestadt and Jocelyn Mittlestadt, both of Round Lake, Ill.; Shawn Daub of Kansas City, Mo.; Tony (wife Brenda) Hair of Adel, IA., and many friends and extended family.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Russell Locke, mother & father in-law June "JG" & Mary Stamper, half-brother Harlan Husted, brother-in-law Max Dale Stamper, her cousins Virginia Vansurksum, Bernice Brix, Vaughn Allen, Doyle Stamper, and J.R. Miller.
